WEST MICHIGAN PORTRAIT PLANNING
Where are you going to display the portraits?
Pay attention to the color & style of décor of your home.
What style of portrait are you looking for?
• Traditional, casual, dramatic or fun
• Outdoor/Location portrait or studio portraits
Discuss and decide on a location before-hand or for
studio portraits, discuss background options. |
|
Here is a list of common uses for portraits:
• Displaying at home or work
• Custom graduation/birth announcements
• Hand-outs and displays at parties
Gifts for:
• Parents & Grandparents
• Other family members
• Friends & Neighbors
• Teachers, coaches & counselors
• Religious leaders
Clothing Suggestions:
• Solid colors & long sleeves work best
• Bring multiple outfits, formal & casual
• Avoid distracting patterns (stripes, plaids, flowers, dots, etc.)
• Comfortable clothing makes for a more relaxed experience
• Make sure that no one clashes when doing a group portrait
• Light clothing/dark background or dark clothing/light background draws more attention to the body
• Similar toned clothes as the background draws more attention to the face
• White, cream & khaki are generally safe neutral colors
• Neutral colors along with warm tones such as brown, sage, dusty reds, green, etc. are good choices for outdoor portraits
• Make sure your shoes, socks, pants/skirt, and any accessories match your outfit
• Don’t forget to iron any wrinkled clothes
• Bring glasses with the lenses removed if possible
• Props from a hobby or interest can help to personalize your portrait: some items commonly used are uniforms, musical instruments, sports equipment, pets, favorite item, etc.
• Having a friend or sibling along can be helpful for children or senior portraits
Grooming:
• Style your hair before your session – try to keep it out of your eyes
• Have a comb or brush available for touch-ups
• If you are considering getting a haircut, do it about one week before your session
• Have any make-up applied before you arrive
• Shave and trim your nails if needed
• Limit sun exposure before your session to avoid tan lines & burns
• Come well rested
• Don’t come hungry and try to have snacks if you are planning on a long session or multiple locations |
